What will an increasingly connected digital economy really mean for business? And what role does the digitalisation of companies in ‘traditional industries’ play, compared to that of digitally born tech start-ups, as a means to increase competitiveness? What can a more Digital Belgium learn from other economies, and how does that play into where Europe’s digital agenda currently is and should be heading?

In April, Deputy Prime Minister Alexander De Croo presented his Digital Belgium plan. By 2020 the plan aims to get Belgium into the digital top three of the European Digital Economy and Society Index, for 1,000 new start-ups to take root in Belgium and for the digital revolution to deliver 50,000 new jobs in a variety of sectors.

At this exclusive business breakfast, De Croo will present some of the plan’s main aspects and discuss the role business plays in achieving the Digital Belgium objectives. De Croo’s key note will be followed by remarks from international businesses in emerging as well as mature industries.

The Deputy Prime Minister’s keynote will be followed by digital business perspectives from Filip Nuytemans, General Manager of UBER and from Bart Verbeeck, Sales Director of G4S.

About Alexander De Croo

Alexander De Croo, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Digital Agenda, Belgian Parliament

De Croo entered politics in 2009 and was soon after elected chairman of the Open VLD (Open Flemish Liberals and Democrats) party. In 2012, De Croo became Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Pensions in the federal Belgian government. In 2013 he became vice-chairman of the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Council on Ageing. In the current Michel government, De Croo serves as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Development Cooperation, Digital Agenda, Telecom and Postal Services. Before his political career, De Croo worked as a strategy consultant with The Boston Consulting Group and founded his own company: Darts-ip, a consulting firm in the field of intellectual property rights. De Croo holds a degree in Business Engineering from VUB and an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management (University of Chicago, USA). In March 2015, De Croo was selected as Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum, a network of leading figures in economy, technology and international cooperation.
