Topic:

This seminar uses a new approach aiming at providing you with the necessary knowledge frame of Arab-Islamic history that will enable you to better understand the events and the currents that founded the Arab-Islamic civilization and that are still relevant today. The first years of the Islamic faith, the establishing of the state, the power struggle after the death of the prophet, the foundation of the Omayyad empire and it’s demise. We will examine the historical texts with a critical mind set and try to reconstruct the puzzle out of a holistic approach, mixing history, geopolitics with history of ideas and of theology.

Dyab Abou Jahjah, a Belgian-Lebanese opinion maker, writer and civil rights activist.

Dyab Abou Jahjah (Arabic: دياب أبو جهجه‎, born 24 June 1971 in Hanin, Lebanon) is an Arab political activist and writer who was active in Europe between 2001 and 2007. He is the founder and former leader of the Arab European League (AEL), a Pan-Arabist movement that supports the interests of Muslim immigrants in Europe. Since then, Abou Jahjah took distance from identity politics and is more operating out of a non-ethnic, secular and leftist framework.

Background:

It was Henri Louis Bergson who said “The present contains nothing more than the past, and what is found in the effect is already in the cause.” Recent developments in our Western society have raised numerous questions about the Islam, migration, the Arab Spring, radicalization, fanaticism, the Koran, the Prophet….but in fact….what do we, as Westerners, really know about the Arabic-Islamic Civilization ? We barely know our own histories, let alone the Arabic Islam History. Fifteen years ago my wife and I backpacked through Jordan, Israel, Palestine, Syria, and Lebanon. It was one of the ‘richest’ travels we made in our lives. Some of the sites we then visited are now destroyed by war. In order to understand what is happening in our societies it is vital we study the history of the movements impacting us. Therefore The Future Leadership Institute reached out to a range of Middle East experts to ask to set up a series of seminars about the history of The Middle East, more specifically the Arabic Islam History. Dyab Abou Jahjah a political activist with a university background also understands the need to know the history of what moves us. He engaged in documenting and writing a series of historical courses on the Arabic Islam History. (Gert Van Mol)
