Vice Foreign Minister Lv Guozeng, PERMANENT MISSION OF THE PEOPLE’S REPUBLIC OF CHINA TO THE UNITED NATIONS OFFICE AT GENEVA AND OTHER INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS IN SWITZERLAND

On September 26, 2009, vice foreign minister Lv Guozeng attended the opening ceremony of the 3rd China Yangzhou World Canal Cities Exposition and Canal Cities Mayors’ Forum in Yangzhou, Jiangsu province.

Addressing the ceremony, Lv said that the Exposition has become a new channel of exchanges for mayors of canal cities at home and abroad, a new window for the world to understand China and a new arena for China’s foreign exchanges and cooperation at local level. The Exposition will further advance the friendly exchanges and cooperation between Chinese and foreign canal cities and promote adequate protection and rational use of canals in the process of rapid economic and social progress in order to achieve harmonious development between people and nature, cities and canals. It will help continue and enhance the important role of canals in the human civilization.

The Exposition is co-hosted by the China National Committee for Pacific Economic Cooperation and the Yangzhou municipal government. The previous two expositions have been held successfully in 2007 and 2008. Mayors of over 20 canal cities from 10-plus countries and Chinese cities along the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal as well as representatives of international organizations such as UNESCO and the World Tourism Organization attended this year’s event.
